Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye!

I saw the new Transformers movie on Saturday. What did I think? Transformers definitely

surprised so many of us. I was very pleased with the outcome of the movie. Yes, it even left room for a sequel. The action scenes were spectacular. Visual effects, sound & music were all meshed together very nicely. Two thumbs up! I only have one bit of beef with it..(SPOILER AHEAD) I can’t believe that they killed Jazz. I saw it and was like, NO! Not Jazz. I couldn’t believe it. It was true though. Oh, well…he died bravely though. Of course I knew Starscream would get away, he always does. I thought Bumblebee’s “sophisticated” voice was a way different change from what he sounded like originally, but it was cool anyway. I enjoyed this movie very much and not because I liked Transformers growing up. The movie did not leave newcomers at a loss. It explained things quite briefly, but detailed enough for those that know little or nothing about the history of Transformers. I truly hope there will be a sequel to this movie. ‘Till next time, C ya!

Transformers? No Thanks.

The Transformers were a line of toys that became popular in the early 1980’s onward, spawning a cartoon series, comics, and feature-length animated film in 1986. Known for their super-cool ability to transform into machines resembling Earth vehicles, the Transformers are an emblem of childhood happiness for many teen and adult males today.

My favorite Transformer was the almighty Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots (the good guys), who would transform into a red and blue semi-truck. Believe me, it was cool.

When I remember the Transformers, I smile with a bit of nostalgia and hear the catchphrase, “Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye”. Then a sharp pain stabs my heart as I remember my mom selling all the cool figures, including several Optimus Primes, at a garage sale for like a nickel each, when they could be now be worth hundreds of dollars. Thanks, Mom.

Now it’s 2007, and “Transformers”, helmed by blockbuster director, Michael Bay (“The Island”, “Armageddon”), is probably the most anticipated movie of the summer. Sadly, it sucks. It shall henceforth be remembered as one of the biggest letdowns of 2007.

Although, I’m not sure what I was expecting from a movie about giant, warring, shape-shifting, alien robots whose battleground happens to be our little planet, but I know I was expecting better.

The robots are really cool-looking and steal the show with their more-human-than-the-actual-hum an-actors behavior and conversations. And it’s fun to watch them destroy downtown Los Angeles in their confusing and chaotic battles, but a whole gaggle of quick-cut glimpses and interspersed cheesy one-liners cannot make up for a weak and pointless story.

At a too-long, two-and-a-half hours, “Transformers” drags along, wasting the comedic skills of Shia LaBeouf (“Disturbia”) and character acting of Jon Voight (“Pearl Harbor”) and John Turturro (“Mr. Deeds”) in boring scenes. And will someone tell me why Megan Fox is in this movie other than for being blatant eye-candy? Who’s Megan Fox, you ask? Exactly.

Unless you’re a Transformers-can-do-no-wrong kind of fan, you might want to offer a polite, “no, thanks.”

Transformers: more than meets the eye? I wish.

-

Rating: 2 stars out of 4

Grade: C+

transformers : more than meets the eye, indeed! i just recently watched the ’80’s cartoon inspired motion picture (produced by THE Stephen Spielberg! ’nuff said!) and here’s what i thought:

they stomped spider-man 3! they killed live free or die hard! they even kicked the pirates of the Caribbean from port to stern! this is THE movie blockbuster of the summer! if you do not go to the movies but one time this summer, make the transformers the movie you choose.

the CGI was the best i have ever seen, the acting was superb, and the very concept of the plot was more than a die hard transformers fan such as myself could have hoped for! not to mention the new look for optimus prime! i mean, FLAMES, BABY! this film managed to keep true to the essence of the transformers saga while, simultaneously, bringing the franchise to a whole new level.

trust me when i say, this is more than a kid-targeted sci-fi flick. this ain’t your daddies transformers, fan boy! my father, a fifty-something ex-Vietnam vet biker, a guy who finds science fiction to be, at best, hokey, sat through this movie with a look of astonishment on his face. my four year old son, who has the attention span of a mayfly, sat stock still for the entire almost two and a half hours! a feat that is , by no means, small!

in short, whether you’re a die hard fan or being introduced to the famed robots in disguise for the first time, you are guaranteed to walk out of that theater with a HUGE smile on your face!

AUTO-BOTS, ROLL OUT!
