Movie reviews: The Transformers (2007) – Part 37

“Transformers” is a bit, and this is indeed my favorite way to describe things, schizophrenic . The first half of the movie (and let’s not give it any credit – this is not a “film” in any way) way spends way too long as a throw-back to “E.T.”, turning Bumblebee into less of an heroic Autobot, and more of a sad little cute alien who just wants to go home. Bleh. Other objections include spending exactly zero seconds mourning the loss of one of our heroes (it’s a good thing he didn’t matter much anyway – SPOILER ALERT! -it was just Jazz), which becomes hilarious as Optimus Prime holds BOTH HALVES of his dead comrade limply as he thanks everyone for coming out and showing support. I also found it difficult to distinguish separate voice actors for the ‘bots as they all sounded the same, and no one was given any real characterization.
Despite it’s limp nature, I’m still going to give Transformers a favorable recommendation and a four-star rating. Why? Well, let’s just say that some movies provide character development and an engaging, thought-provoking story – and some movies feature five-story tall robots beating the hell out of each other.
