Movie reviews: The Transformers (2007) – Part 1

Genre: Science Fiction/Adventure
Director: Michael Bay
Stars: Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson
Running time: 144 minutes
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Distributors: Paramount, Dreamworks
Earth’s fate hangs in the balance as two robotic races that can transform into various vehicles duke it out. A high school student named Sam Witwicki holds the key that can save the planet. The secret is a mysterious cube called the Allspark which can turn mechanical objects into living creatures. “Transformers” is a movie that fans of the eighties cartoon series, teen girls in love with Shia LaBeouf, science fiction fans and adventure fans will love. This combination “Independence Day”, “Small Soldiers”, and “Holes” works well, despite the long running time.
LaBeouf still makes me think of his annoying character in “Even Stevens”, but after his performances in “Disturbia” and this movie, I have to admit that he is a good actor. Megan Fox, the mean girl in “Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen”, plays a beautiful alpha female. Josh Duhamel and Tyrese Gibson are good as tough Air Force special ops commandos. And the great Jon Voight plays the common-sense Secretary of Defense.
Director Michael Bay definitely knows how to put on a show. He has shown this time and again in movies like “Pearl Harbor” and “Armaggedan”, and in this movie which he co-produced with Steven Spielberg. Here he has gathered an army of visual effects experts to bring the Transformers to life. Bay combines a decent story with the effects to smoothly move the plot along. Kudos go to the editing team for what had to be a challenging job. Best of all, Bay and his cast and crew make “Transformers” fun. The film could have been shorter but what the heck?
In sum, “Transformers” is a very entertaining science fiction adventure that is fun. Highly recommended!

Movie reviews: The Transformers (2007) – Part 10

I was a fan of Transformers back in the 80’s. I had some of the toys, including Optimus Prime, the Dinobots and the Constructicons. The daily cartoon was a little cheesy. The Transformers animated cartoon was a lot closer to the mark (with me) on how dark the series should be. The mere fact that they killed off Optimus Prime showed the serious potential. Of course, then they went off on another cheesy vein with the junk planet, for example…
Now comes the current movie. I went into the theater without much in the way of expectations. I heard that the action scenes and the computer generated animation were incredible, and I wasn’t disappointed on that score. I felt that some of the action went by a little too fast, especially in the climactic battle in the downtown area. I was certainly made to feel like I was there in the thick of the action with the sound effects and explosions. I was told by friends that I couldn’t miss seeing this movie in the theater, specifically for that experience.
Now comes the parts that I was particularly disappointed with.
Shia LaBeouf: I liked him in Holes and in Disturbia. I think he is a fine actor. I thought he was a completely unnecessary character in Transformers, except perhaps because they had a human boy in the cartoon series, and they were using him as some sort of tie-in. I felt that the romance between his character and Megan Fox’s character felt completely tacked on to the storyline. I didn’t connect with or care about these characters at all. I was waiting for robots to fight and big battles and explosions… and these two teenagers and their teenage antics just got in the way. Bumblebee was a little cheesy as well, though he was a cool car.
John Turturro: He was awesome in “The Big Lebowski” and “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou”. He proved to be yet another annoying and completely unnecessary human character in Transformers, much like the majority of the rest of the human cast.
Finally, I really wished Michael Bay and the writers would have come to a decision as to who their target audience really was. Were they going to appeal to the old 80’s nostalgic Transformers fans of yore, or were they going to try to appeal to a newer and younger audience? Their attempt to appeal to both completely fell flat, in my opinion. I was sitting there watching this movie in a theater full of kids and parents. Suddenly there’s this long dialog on screen about how Shia’s character’s parents might have inadvertently walked in on him “masturbating”. Nevermind that this bit wasn’t really appropriate for kids in the first place, but it went on entirely too long. Some of the adults in the theater, who were sitting by themselves, chuckled. Nearly all of the parents who had kids there shifted uncomfortably in their seats. Their grade school children, sitting next to them, asked, “Daddy, what the people on the screen talking about?”

Transformers was THE movie everyone was talking about in 2007. There was certainly a lot of hype around, but was the film any good?
ACTORS
The film chose an relatively unknowny actor called Shia LaBeouf to head up the cast. He ws chosen because of his boy-next-door looks, and cheeky personality, which perfectly fits the script. He appeals to the girls because he has charisma, and yet the boys can also identify with him because he’s not drop-dead gorgeous. In all the interviews he gave (and there were hundreds!) he came across as a thoroughly likeable chap.
He manages to fly through the film with his humour intact, giving us the impression that although it’s completely weird to have a car looking after you, and robots chasing you, it’s still something he can cope with. In fact, it’s really rather cool!
The female lead is Megan Fox, who manages to avoid the trap of being the unwanted femal who gets in the way. She joins in the action, and gives Shia’s character (Sam) as good as she gets when they start the verbal sparring.
Superstar John Voight also makes an appearing, raising the kudos of the movie higher.
STORY
The story is inspired by the original comic books and the 1980s toy series. The main Transformer characters are Optimus Prime (the Autobot goodie) and Megatron (the Decepticon baddie) who are continuing a centuries-old battle. Anyone who has ever played with a Transformers toy wll recognise the screenplay from their own imaginations, as huge robots, the size of sky-scraper, battle above shrieking humans. Masterful!
SPECIAL EFFECTS
The special effects are, of course, what everyone is talking about, and yes, they’re fantastic. A combination of computer generated material and normal FX, the scenes have all been edited seamlessly together. One of the main acheivements of the film is that you can suspend your disbeleif, and really lose yourself in the action. Because of the way the movie has been writen and directed (by Michael Bay), and the way the characters react to situations, the whole story becomes believable.
The movie won several awards for the special effects. The Visual Effects Society awarded it awards for the best visual effects in an “effects driven” film and the “best single visual effects sequence” (the Optimus-Bonecrusher battle), and it was nominated for three Academy Awards.
Looking at the statistics, Transformers is is the thirtieth most successful film ever released, and was the highest grossing non-sequel movie in 2007. The film is rated 13, for the sci-fi violence, and the brief sexual allusions. I think this is rather over-the-top, and feel a PG would have been better. It’s a good clean fun, family movie.
I loved the action, and loved the humour between the two main charactesr. I loved the relationship that built between Sam and his car, and I can’t wait for the ext Transformers film to be released in 2009!

And finding out that the cube landed on the planet, Earth. Later it was discovered by the U.S Government and the built a Dam making it as a research facility for it. Megatron later on found out that it was there on earth but as he went to earth, accidentally he crash-landed in Artic Ocean and was frozen. Years had passed and he was found and brought to the same facility where Allspark is located. Autobots were dispersed throughout the entire universe. Optimus Prime’s group traveled to earth in search of the Allspark. However, Decepticons follows. Movie previews: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Not due out at the cinemas until June 2009, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” is a movie which all science fiction fans of the world will most definitely be eagerly anticipating. After the success of “Transformers” in 2007, audiences now know to expect special effects of an exceptional standard and a fine storyline to boot. Once more the movie is to be directed by Michael Bay, produced by Spielberg, and written by a wonderful team of three. The writers this time around are those of Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Ehren Kruger (only Ehren Kruger was not involved with the writing process of the first film, and here replaces John Rogers in the role of third writer). The film shall again star Shia LaBeouf, and for all those that enjoyed the first movie then it’s time to once more prepare for something truly special.
Apparently we can expect the tone of this second movie to be very similar to that of the first; this time round however writer Roberto Orci has stated that rather than seeing things from a human perspective as opposed to a robot perspective; things will be much more evenly balanced (he announced this on the Don Murphy internet forum). It’s to be a very interesting second Transformer telling, and this time round it has also been announced that the plot progression will be far more flowing than it was with the first film.
It definitely seems as though it’s to be an improvement upon the original “Transformers” film, and as the release date draws ever closer I’m sure that we’ll find out far more about the movie and a lot more will be revealed. It has more or less the same team behind it and with a great cast again I see no reason why this second Transformers movie should not outshine the first. The first film was very good, this time around it seems as though all those involved are even more on the ball however and are working to make 2009s Transformers movie an even greater offering than the last.
$8 million has here been shelled out in order to get the three writers on board alone. A lot of money is going into this movie and everyone involved is doing their utmost to make sure that this movie is as amazing as it possibly can be. A lot of money is being spent, the best professionals possible are being employed to make sure that the movie shines, and in every area director Michael Bay is looking to impress with the “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” movie.
I’ve always been a great fan of Shia LaBeouf and very much look forward to witnessing his involvement within this second Transformers movie; he’s just one of a number of talented cast members that will here be involved however and I’m sure that all those cast within this movie will be absolutely exceptional in their roles.
“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” looks set to be the movie to see in summer 2009, it has a very big budget and it’s excellent to see that all those involved are doing their very best to make sure that the movie does not disappoint. The first movie was brilliant, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” looks all set to outshine it strongly however and when the movie sees its release in June 2009 I am entirely sure that it will astound and amaze all those that see it. “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” will most definitely be a hugely exciting movie, and all I’ve now got left to say on the matter is roll on summer 2009!

“Transformers” is a true-to-form summer blockbuster. Based on an already successful toy and TV cartoon franchise, “Transformers” recreates in the big screen the same awe inspiring imagination that many of us who grew up watching them on TV experienced. Maybe because Peter Cullen voiced Optimus Prime, the same guy who voiced Optimus Prime in the cartoons. I’m not gonna dwell on the plot, it’s basically Autobots vs. Decepticons on Earth, duh.
But many familiar guys are here. Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Ratchet, Jazz, and Ironhide for the Autobots. Megatron, Starscream, Barricade, Devastator, Bonecrusher, and Blackout for the Decepticons. Bumblebee is updated. He used to be a VW bug. He’s a Camaro now. Megatron is a jet with a big gun. He used to be just a big gun, often fired by Starscream. I remember Ratchet as an ambulance. He’s someting else in this movie. Devastator was the Constructicons combined into one. He’s his own Decepticon in this movie as a tank. Barricade was a racing car, but not one of the original Decepticons. He’s a Ford Mustang police squad car in this movie. Soundwave, my favorite Decepticon is missing. I liked him primarily because of his Cylon Raider-like voice. Yes, that’s the Cylons from old school Battlestar Galactica.
The action is fast and furious and, often, very hard to appreciate in one sitting. Too many things flying off and exploding. In the city street fight scene, Ironhide performs all sorts of acrobatic moves that I didn’t catch in the big screen. You have a 60 ft robot cartwheeling and tumbling on the streets to avoid incoming missiles. But it took me several loops to fully appreciate the scenes. All I remember from the theater was that it was a cool fight.
Another scene worth several views is Starscream jacking up the F-22’s. This scene really shows you how much more powerful the Transformers are from the human-made machines.
“Non-biological extraterrestrials. Try and keep up with the acronyms”
Aside from geeking out from the Autobots and Decepticons, one actor stood out for his comedic scenes, John Turturro as Agent Simmons of Sector 7. As the main representative for the secretive government department, John Turturro has the duty of retrieving Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) because of Sam’s dealings with the NBE’s (the Transformers). A summer blockbuster is not complete without funny parts. And Agent Simmons has the goofy scenes reminding you that this movie is not to be taken seriously and is all for fun.
Transformers Is A Movie That Will Become A Classic

For those unaware of the animated series, here is a brief description. On the planet Cybertron, there is a war for the source of life (the Allspark) of its robotic inhabitants. These robots, consisting of both the righteous and kind Autobots, and the malicious and cruel Decepticons, fight to either preserve peace or to conquer the universe.
They’re war spans the universe until they finally land on our planet and take the forms of cars (Autobots) or airplanes (Decepticons). As the war progresses, the Autobots are befriended by the human Sam Spike Witwicky as they try to find the Allspark. The Autobots are led by the wise Optimus Prime while the Decepticons are led by the villainous Megatron.
Now, the plot of the film, like any book, comic book, or TV adaptation, has it’s own fair share of deviances from the source material, but this is one of those rare instances where that would be considered a good thing.
In this version, Sam Witwicky’s encounters with the Autobots and Decepticons are not by mere chance. He is being sought by both sides because he has a pair of glasses that belong to his ancestor, an explorer, that also reveal the location of the Allspark. Siding with the Autobots and the United States Military, Sam sets out to find the Allspark before the Decepticons get it and claim victory.
This film boasts a cast of fresh faces with Shia LaBeouf as Sam, Megan Fox, John Turturro, Tyrese Gibson, John Voigt, and featuring Hugo Weaving as Megatron, and original voice actor Peter Cullen reprising his role as Optimus Prime. The acting is fluently delivered and fairly realistic given the story.
One problem the movie does have is that it is a difficult concept to make an audience believe in, but if one can simply get over the fact that it isn’t exactly Shakespeare, then it should be a surprisingly good time. It should also be pointed out that the special effects in this film are absolutely breath-taking. So, if you’d like a movie that has amazing visuals, good acting, and a story deeper than most action movies, then Transformers is definitely for you.
