More than meets the eye: Anticipating the release of the Transformers movie – Part 1

The thought of finally watching the movie, Transformers, surely gives a tingle of excitement to all those who grew up with these “robots in disguise.” The story of the epic battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons for the fate of mankind captured the imagination of the kids of the time.

Now we are all grown up, and the prospect of being transported back to our childhood days is slowly sinking in. Better and better, it is not even an animated movie to reflect the original cartoon series. THIS IS THE REAL THING. Thanks to the wonders of CGI, we think to ourselves – how fitting that the movie still inherently targets its original audience – some twenty years on.

Let’s face it, had such a movie been made during ‘our’ time, it would have looked plastic, even toy like a la Japan’s Godzilla and Ultraman series. Actually, it would have been impossible even – lest we forget – these robots can also TRANSFORM.

The trailers and promotions for the movie have looked absolutely smashing so far, but I cannot help but feel a little apprehensive. No doubt that the movie will have updated the original cartoon to something eminently realistic and more catered to us adults, but the premise for the story somehow bothers me.

It is easy to believe in anything as a kid, so long as it excites. But the idea that somewhere out there is a planet (the Transformers’ home planet Cybertron) with inhabitants created in the exact image of our machines on Earth – now that’s rather far out isn’t it? We have all grown up after all. Can the movie address this loophole, or are we expected to leave our brains outside the cinema and just enjoy?

Then too, Transformers was a really long running series. Many movie adaptations of whatever have generally come up short on storyline and even characters. One famous example is Godzilla, which looked nothing like the monster from the original Japanese series.

What then, are those characters that have made the cut? I can imagine that many of the first generation Transformers will feature. We will probably see Optimus Prime and Megatron battling it out, but will we be also be seeing some of the Dinobots or Constructicons in action? Will some characters be axed in favour of plot details? Will we be missing the lovable Bumblebee? Will we be seeing the annoying but traitorous Starscream? Or the mysterious but versatile Soundwave? And what about the immensely powerful Unicron (he’s an actual planet!), who after all did not make an appearance until much later in the original series?

So many questions, and really only one answer. Transformers: The Movie is coming soon – to a cinema near you. Only one thing is for sure – it will be “more than meets the eye.”

Movie reviews: The Transformers (2007) – Part 1

Genre: Science Fiction/Adventure

Director: Michael Bay

Stars: Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson

Running time: 144 minutes

MPAA Rating: PG-13

Distributors: Paramount, Dreamworks

Earth’s fate hangs in the balance as two robotic races that can transform into various vehicles duke it out. A high school student named Sam Witwicki holds the key that can save the planet. The secret is a mysterious cube called the Allspark which can turn mechanical objects into living creatures. “Transformers” is a movie that fans of the eighties cartoon series, teen girls in love with Shia LaBeouf, science fiction fans and adventure fans will love. This combination “Independence Day”, “Small Soldiers”, and “Holes” works well, despite the long running time.

LaBeouf still makes me think of his annoying character in “Even Stevens”, but after his performances in “Disturbia” and this movie, I have to admit that he is a good actor. Megan Fox, the mean girl in “Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen”, plays a beautiful alpha female. Josh Duhamel and Tyrese Gibson are good as tough Air Force special ops commandos. And the great Jon Voight plays the common-sense Secretary of Defense.

Director Michael Bay definitely knows how to put on a show. He has shown this time and again in movies like “Pearl Harbor” and “Armaggedan”, and in this movie which he co-produced with Steven Spielberg. Here he has gathered an army of visual effects experts to bring the Transformers to life. Bay combines a decent story with the effects to smoothly move the plot along. Kudos go to the editing team for what had to be a challenging job. Best of all, Bay and his cast and crew make “Transformers” fun. The film could have been shorter but what the heck?

In sum, “Transformers” is a very entertaining science fiction adventure that is fun. Highly recommended!

When I was a child, one of the most popular animated series on television was the Transformers. Detailing week after week the battles between Optimus Prime and Megatron, the series was fun to watch, and always exciting.

So, when I heard a couple years back that they were doing a live-action version of the show, I was naturally excited. However, my excitement was tempered with caution. After all, who hasn’t seen a show from their past turned into a crappy movie?

Well, from the opening of the film, I knew I was in for a treat. With the original voice talent of the old show’s Optimus, I got goosebumps.

Like all adaptations, it drags a bit in the first few minutes, as it sets up story lines. But with the first attack on the U.S. military base, the movie’s action is non-stop.

The characters interact well, with the tongue-in-cheek humor inherent in the cartoon. Ironhide is STILL trying to blow everything he can find to smithereens with his huge guns, Bumblebee of course still has to communicate through his in-car stereo, and the Decepticons still fight amongst one another.

Of course, now the computer animation is so sophisticated, that you can actually see the machines transform-not just suddenly appear as robots. The effects are smooth and flawless, and the interaction between CGI and real-world objects is without equal in recent memory.

The acting shines unusually brightly in this film-unusual because its an action-adventure, traditionally NOT known for outstanding performances. The voice acting is perfect, and the humans are good, particularly the two young leads.

The only time, in fact, that the acting level dipped was during the climactic battle between Prime and Megatron, where the two of them trade barbs that seem ripped right out of the old show

For fans of the original comic book and cartoon, Transformers couldn’t come soon enough. Moviegoers have been subjected to vague trailers in the cinema for months now.

Now that the movie has arrived and co produced by Steven Spielberg, these fans have something to look forward to.

While I watched Transformers as a Saturday morning cartoon when I was a child, and enjoyed it well enough, as a filler between Bugs Bunny and the Tarzan/Zorro Hour of Power, I wouldn’t call myself a diehard fan. My eleven year old son, wanted to see this live action Transformers, so I gladly took him to the show.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but found out soon enough. I felt as if I were bombarded with every stereotype of American excess for about two and half hours. This movie didn’t seem so much to me a story about alien robots, chasing what amounts to be a giant car battery, but a subtle commercial about the American military. Great amounts of footage were shown of the men in middle east, a sort of GI Joe, halcyon setting with men showering, and floating about in plastic inflatable pools. It made me think of MASH in the middle east. There was even a scene, designed to touch the sentimental, of one of the men, talking to his wife and newborn baby girl (whom he had not yet met) over a web cam. For some reason, this touch of humanity failed to evoke the emotions, that director Michael Bay had hoped for. All of this rah rah rah’ American military, support for the war on Iraq and Afghanistan fell short. It rang hollow. The attempt vaguely reminded me of second world war propaganda pictures, created to bolster the flagging optimism of a nation and build support for the war effort.

Everything in this movie carried an American connotation to it, right down to the young hero’s name being Sam. This unlikely young man, wasn’t your typical hero, or anything special. His claim to fame were his great grandfather’s deeds, that he thought so highly of, that he tried to hock family heirlooms over Ebay, in order to buy a car. The discoveries Sam’s great grandfather made in the Arctic Circle were what ultimately led the Autobots to search Earth.

Speaking of cars, every one of the cars in the movie, save for a very brief drive by of a Porsche dealership were American heavy metal cars, including Bumblebee the autobot who turned into a yellow Camero. There was a constant and reinforced message, that everything was more than it seemed. For example the Daisy Duke look alike,

Transformers was possibly the coolest movie I have ever seen. It had action, romance, humor and thrills. The CGI was out of this world, the transformations were spectacular (props to ILM for that one), and the explosions, the oh so many explosions blew me away. The acting was really good, especially on Shia Labeouf’s part (it’s hard to act like a non-existent robot is attacking you. The direction by Micheal Bay was perfect, he was obviously born to make this movie, he is the action king *bows down* “I’m not worthy!”. Not only did it stand as a great sci-fi movie and action movie, it paid homage to the original cartoon which every child of the eighties enjoyed. Everyone in the theater cheered when Optimus Prime came on the screen as the blue-and-red-flamed semi-truck. I recommend this movie to any one who likes fast-paced action, quirky comedy and giant shape-shifting fighting robots. And, who doesn’t?

Three Transformers Action Figures That Stand Out

August 26, 2009 by Optimus Prime

Transformers The Movie has hit the cinemas hard. Fans raving about it and transformers action figures are sold like crazy. There are hundreds of action figure items sold in toy stores around the world. Some are great and others are not even worth looking. Out of these hundreds of transformers action figures some really stand out among fans. In this article we’ll review three of them. It’s hard to pick just three out of tens excellent candidates but here it is.

1. Transformers Movie Leader Optimus Prime Action Figure This figure really similar to the movie version of Optimus Prime so it really makes a nice collectors item. Don’t get me wrong though, your children will love to play with just as much. Optimus truck form looks cool and his robot form is even cooler. The electronic lights and sounds add a realistic adventure. The Ion Blaster is great too. It takes a little while to transform Optimus to robot form so smaller kids may find it too challenging but for bigger kids the challenge may prove to be a lot of fun. Too bad it’s made of plastic. If only it was made from diecast it would have been perfect.

2. Transformers Cybertron Supreme Class Cybertron Primus Action Figure This thing an amazing, fun, cool looking and huge transformers figure. Would advise it for older children though because transformation is quite complex ( but still fun ). However, for younger children transforming Primus can be quite a challenge. They even might get frustated in trying and break them instead. Anyway, this is certainly a great toy for grownups or older kids. One last thing: if you buy it, play with it; it is a real shame to keep this one in the box. Or better yet buy two, one to keep in the box and one to play with. If want to display it you won’t be embarrassed. This figure is made with good material, excellent build quality, great details and finish too. The great details allows you to keep transforming Primus over and over again and the pieces will still fits tightly.

3. Hasbro Transformers Ultimate Bumblebee Action Figure Another great transformers figure for collectors. Just like the Primus figure this one is also too difficult for children to change modes from robot to car and vice versa. And just like the other figures this one also a very cool figure that you can proudly display on your office desk, A/V rack or shelf so your friends, kids, neighbors or anyone can admire it.

This is probably the biggest transformer figure i’ve ever known. It is one of the most detailed too. Plenty of articulation points and moving pieces makes it very pose able. The left hand has articulate fingers and an opossable thumb, so you can pose it while picking flowers or something like that. It makes different sounds in robot and vehicle mode, the eyes and headlights are blue and very intense, while the backlights sparkle in red as they should. It also has speed sensitive engine sounds when it is in camaro mode Conclusion? This is a must buy for Transformers lovers. If you buy it you will never regret it.

Movie reviews: The Transformers (2007) – Part 42

I am a child of the 80’s yet somehow, I do not remember the television show The Transformers very well. Of course I remember that it existed and there were toys and I had an idea on the general theme of the Transformers, however no actual memories existed for having watched it. I guess that could be because I was a little girl, with a far bigger interest in all things girly, like Care Bears and Rainbow Bright. Transforming trucks hardly appealed to me back then. So for this reason, I had fairly low expectations for the Transformers film. Whereas my partner could not have been more excited.

So I organised my three nephews to come and the 5 of us went to see the film. Among the distraction of telling the boys to stop drinking so much softdrink or they would need to pee, I found myself suddenly completely enthralled with the film I expected little from.

The Transformers provided an action packed adventure right from the opening scene. There were no moments when I wished it would just hurry up and end and I found myself thoroughly entertained. The special effects were of a high standard and did not appear at all disappointing and lame like I may have expected. The characters were entertaining, from humans to autobots.

This is the type of film that I saw very little to complain about. Unfortunately I have seen many negative reviews for the film, but from everyone I know who has seen the film, they all report the same positivity that I left with. What was especially unexpected was the humour in the film. It was suprisingly funny at times and even a little adult, with a conversation about masterbating and all. This was something that I am sure went right over my 6 year old nephews head, but was a source of great amusement for his 12 year old brother. All this much to my own horror.

If you are looking for an entertaining action film, that is good for all ages, with great special effects, good solid acting, a fairly well-known cast and a sprinkle of humour, The Transformers is a must see. I now have it set in my mind that when I am rich and famous, I want my very own Bumblebee, or a Lamborgini that is equally flash at least! So give this film a go. I doubt you will be disappointed.
